Two Police Operations Conducted in the Valleyfield Region

Valleyfield, November 13, 2009 – Last November 10, investigators of the Central St. Lawrence Valley RCMP Detachment - Valleyfield Office, in partnership with the Sûreté du Québec, carried out two police raids following surveillance operations in the Rivière-Beaudette and Saint-Anicet areas.  The raids resulted in the seizure of approximately $650,000.

The first operation, targeting a group engaging in contraband tobacco activity, resulted in the seizure of 100 cases of contraband cigarettes and 6,468 lbs. of tobacco.  The police also seized a vehicle, a trailer and a boat used by the organization.   Four suspects were arrested and will appear in court at a later date to face charges under the Excise Act, 2001.

On the same day, the RCMP and SQ officers concluded another surveillance operation by seizing from a vehicle a significant amount in US currency under the Customs Act.  The investigation is still ongoing by the Integrated Proceeds of Crime Unit, and charges of possession of property obtained by crime could be laid.

It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. In an effort to reduce demand, the RCMP uses various methods to raise public awareness of the consequences of buying contraband tobacco products. The illicit tobacco trade presents a serious and growing threat to public safety and health in Canada. People need to be aware that they are funding criminal activity when they purchase contraband tobacco products.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Valleyfield Office at 450 377-3223, or to Info-Crime Québec at 1 800 711-1800. All tips will be kept confidential.
