Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, Wednesday, October 28, 2009 – As part of a joint police operation, members of the RCMP Beauce-Amiante Detachment, with the co-operation of Thetford Mines Municipal Police, intercepted a vehicle on highway 165 in Thetford Mines. The officers seized a large quantity of illegal tobacco. Two suspects were also arrested.
A total of 626 cartons of illegal cigarettes contained in resealable plastic bags, representing more then 125,200 cigarettes, were seized. The officers also seized the vehicle and some money.
A 59-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, both Thetford Mines residents, were arrested and could face charges under the Excise Act 2001, including for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.
It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. In an effort to reduce demand, the RCMP uses various methods to raise public awareness of the consequences of buying contraband tobacco products. The illicit tobacco trade presents a serious and growing threat to public safety and health in Canada. People need to be aware that they are funding criminal activity when they purchase contraband tobacco products.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Beauce-Amiante Detachment at 418-228-2332. All tips will be kept confidential.
