Rouyn-Noranda, September 8, 2009 – Under the Financial Integrity Program, investigators of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Abitibi-Témiscamingue-Nouveau-Québec Detachment visited various local flea markets to educate sellers about the consequences of dealing counterfeit goods. After issuing warnings to offenders, RCMP officers, with the assistance of the Sûreté du Québec, arrested two individuals who refused to comply with the law on September 4, 2009.
As part of this operation, several counterfeit items bearing the logos of legitimate companies were seized, including belt buckles, caps, wallets, purses as well as clothing items. The two individuals arrested were later released and could face charges under the Copyright Act.

Intellectual property crime is mainly related to the illegal counterfeiting and sale of consumer goods or services. This type of crime affects several areas of activities: theft of satellite television signals and counterfeiting of designer clothes, popular household items and even pharmaceuticals.
The RCMP reminds the public that the illegal manufacturing and sale of counterfeit goods account for substantial losses for the Canadian economy. Criminal offences to the Copyright Act are punishable by fines of up to $1 million or imprisonment for up to five years.
The RCMP encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by local individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Abitibi-Témiscamingue–Nouveau-Québec Detachment at 819-797-2120. All tips will be kept confidential.
