Illegal Goods Seized in a Residence Near Drummondville

Drummondville, September 4, 2009 – Last wednesday, following a short investigation, officers of the Customs and Excise Section at the Centre-du-Québec—Mauricie Detachment – Drummondville Office conducted a search in a residence in Daveluyville. The officers seized 22,533 illegal cigarettes. Four individuals were also questioned.
In addition to the contraband cigarettes, twelve cigars, eleven 1.75-litre bottles of illegal alcohol, 32.5g of cannabis and 9g of hashish were also seized.
Two of the four individuals were arrested and released. The suspects could face charges under the Excise Act, 2001 and the Controlled Drugs and Substances.
It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. In an effort to reduce demand, the RCMP uses various methods to raise public awareness of the consequences of buying contraband tobacco products. The illicit tobacco trade presents a serious and growing threat to public safety and health in Canada. People need to be aware that when they purchase contraband tobacco products they are not only committing an offence, but that they are also funding criminal activity.
