The "L" Division Tactical Team is comprised of approximately 30 members posted across Prince Edward Island and also includes members of the Charlottetown, Summerside and Kensington Police Services. While Tactical troop members serve in an operational capacity, some are involved in logistics, training and administrative functions. When the team is deployed, members of the Emergency Response Team, Emergency Medical Team, and Police Dog Services are included to increase the team's capacity to provide a measured response to a public order disturbance.
The team trains twice a year and may include training with other teams from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The training includes both mandatory training on various tactical techniques and scenario training depicting potential public disturbance situations.
Within the team, there are arrest, gas, and object removal sub teams. The tactical troop members and each of these sub-teams are outfitted in state of the art protective equipment reducing the possibility of injury resulting from the impact, thrown objects, gas or fire.
While tactical teams are used primarily for public order demonstrations, because of the command and control structure the team can be used for other functions as well; i.e. searching for missing persons or evidence, scene protection, and neighborhood canvasses.
Public order has become an ever increasing component of police work in the last decade, and the "L" Division team is ready to respond to any challenge.
