OTTAWA – December 20, 2011 – On the evening of December 15th, RCMP resources were deployed to the Champlain Bridge where more than 600 vehicles were checked during one of many R.I.D.E programs being conducted over the holidays.
“We were pleased to have RCMP resources from the National Capital Region Traffic Services and General Duty Protective Policing on this checkpoint,
” commented Sgt. Simon Gallant, non-commissioned officer in charge of the RCMP's National Capital Region Traffic Service.
This operation was part of a series of R.I.D.E Operations being held by various police partners, such as the Ottawa Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and the NCC's conservation officers, in partnership with the Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association (OIBA). During this operation, the RCMP and their partners checked more than 600 vehicles and only one person was given a Provincial Offenses Notice. The OIBA handed out blankets bearing the logos of the police partners to drivers who had not had anything to drink. “I'm very pleased with the results,
” said Sgt. Gallant.
RCMP Traffic Service's mandate is to conduct traffic enforcement on federal roadways and properties in the National Capital Region including enforcement of all provisions of the National Capital Commission's Traffic and Property Regulations, the Government's Property Traffic Regulations, and the Criminal Code as it relates to traffic offences.
“In addition to apprehending impaired drivers, the R.I.D.E program also allows the RCMP to reduce fatal traffic collisions and other traffic concerns in an effort to keep federal roadways and properties safe,
” added Gallant.
The RCMP would like to remind motorists of the dangers of mixing alcohol with driving. If you plan to drink, plan ahead for safe transportation – there are alternatives to drinking and driving. Drive sober, buckle up and always give yourself additional time to reach your destination so you can pay more attention to your driving. When motorists follow safe driving practices, they reduce the risk of death and injury to themselves and to others.
