OTTAWA – June 22, 2010 - In an effort to educate local businesses and citizens of the National Capital Region (NCR) about the financial crimes trends, the RCMP “A” Division created the Merchants Against Financial Crime program. Currently in its ninth year, the program relies on six (6) dedicated University students who visit and liaise with businesses and citizens of the NCR and educate them about these important issues.

Joining forces with the Ottawa Police Service, the Gatineau Police Service, the Bank of Canada and FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada), the 2010 program edition will feature several forty-five minute presentations throughout the summer.  These presentations will be offered free of charge at Place d’Orleans Shopping Mall (see details below).  This is a great opportunity for the public and business representatives to join us during these sessions and be informed about money laundering, counterfeit currency, credit/debit card fraud and identity theft.

Should you wish to attend one of these presentations or to obtain more information about the program, please contact the undersigned. Those RCMP members will be available to conduct interviews and answer any questions you may have in relation to this project.

Place: Place d’Orleans, Community Rendez-Vous Boardroom (by The Bay)
