Sudbury Detachment

The Sudbury Detachment is comprised of 17 police officers and two public service employees who serve the public in the geographical area renowned for a wealth of natural resources and the beauty of the Canadian Shield. Located in Sudbury, the detachment provides federal policing services to the City of Greater Sudbury, the Districts of Manitoulin, Cochrane, Timiskaming, Nipissing and Parry Sound, and the town of Kaschechewan in the District of Kenora.

With a large component of French-speaking citizens in the area, RCMP police services are available in both official languages at the Sudbury Detachment.

The mandate of Sudbury Detachment is the enforcement of federal statutes and the Criminal Code. The enforcement units are all focused on the RCMP priorities of disrupting organized crime and terrorist activities and are divided as follows:

  • Commercial Crime Section
    Active in investigations related to bankruptcy, counterfeit currency, frauds against the federal government and other types of white-collar crime at the local, regional, provincial, national and international levels.

  • Drug Section
    Works to identify, target, investigate, disrupt, and dismantle the international, national/regional, and local drug trafficking organizations that are having the most significant impact in Canada. The aim is to prevent the importation, production, traffic and use of illicit drugs.

  • Federal Enforcement Section
    Combats organized crime through the enforcement of 270 federal statutes within four programs: Consumer Protection, Environmental Protection, Financial Loss to Government and Public Safety.

Sudbury, OntarioPartnerships

Members from Sudbury Detachment work closely with other policing partners and agencies within their Detachment service area.

These include: Timmins Police Services, North Bay Police Services, Greater Sudbury Police Services and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).  Most often, partnerships include drug related investigations and Customs and Excise matters like contraband tobacco. Sudbury members also work with National Aboriginal Policing Services (NAPS), Canada Revenue Agency, Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs Industry Canada, Ontario Ministry of Finance, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and the USA Coast Guard.

The Canada-USA border crosses in the middle of Georgian Bay and the region does not have a land border. However, during the winter months snow mobile patrols are conducted in partnership with the OPP, across the ice.

Community Contributions

The members of the RCMP Sudbury Detachment are involved in a wide variety of activities and programs in and around Sudbury. From helping with fundraisers for childrens’ programs and participating in local service clubs to volunteering for non-profit organizations and coaching children’s sports teams, the RCMP members are a proud part of the community they serve.
