The Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is staffed with 9 police officers and one public service employee serving a region covering 48,737 square kilometres in Northern Ontario and has a population of Sault Ste. Marieapproximately 119,000. The Detachment members provide federal policing services to the District of Algoma in both French and English.

The southern border of the District of Algoma is marked by Lake Superior, Lake Huron and St. Mary`s River. These waterways are part of the St. Lawrence River Seaway and an important factor in the industrial development of the area known for steelmaking, paper manufacturing, mining, forestry and hydroelectric power production.

The area is renowned for its numerous lakes, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling activities. The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is the only land and rail link between Canada and the US from Sarnia, ON to Pidgeon River, ON. Sault Ste. Marie is also located on the Trans-Canada highway, linking Eastern and Western Canada.

Mandate

The mandate of Sault Ste. Marie Detachment is the enforcement of federal statutes and the Criminal Code. The enforcement units are all focused on the RCMP priorities of disrupting organized crime and terrorist activities and are divided as follows:

Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET)
The Lake Superior IBET has members at both the Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay detachments. It is one of 15 IBET teams across the country and one of four in Ontario (“O” Division). These teams are multi-agency law enforcement bodies harmonizing Canadian and U.S. efforts to target cross-border criminal activity and a need to enhance border integrity.

In addition, members of the Detachment often work with additional agencies to fulfil the mandate in the region. Due to its location in a border city on a major waterway, the Detachment works closely with both Canadian and American bodies including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, the US Border Patrol, US Customs, US Immigration and Naturalization Services, the US Coast Guard, and Michigan State Police.

Sault Ste. Marie Joint Forces Drug Unit
This unit is an Ontario Provincial Police-led partnership with the RCMP and Sault Ste. Marie Police Service which focuses on street-level drug investigations. An RCMP officer is also assigned to the Sault Ste. Marie Joint Forces Intelligence Unit which is responsible for gathering criminal intelligence. This unit consists of officers from the OPP, Canadian Border Services Agency, Immigration Canada, RCMP, Ministry of Natural Resources and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
