The Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is staffed with 9 police officers and one public service employee serving a region covering 48,737 square kilometers in Northern Ontario and has a population of approximately 119,000. The Detachment members provide federal policing services to the District of Algoma in both French and English.
The southern border of the District of Algoma is marked by Lake Superior, Lake Huron and St. Mary`s River. These waterways are part of the St. Lawrence River Seaway and an important factor in the industrial development of the area known for steelmaking, paper manufacturing, mining, forestry and hydroelectric power production.
The area is renowned for its numerous lakes, fishing, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling activities. The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is the only land and rail link between Canada and the US from Sarnia, ON to Pidgeon River, ON. Sault Ste. Marie is also located on the Trans-Canada highway, linking Eastern and Western Canada.

The mandate of Sault Ste. Marie Detachment is the enforcement of federal statutes and the Criminal Code. The enforcement units are all focused on the RCMP priorities of disrupting organized crime and terrorist activities and are divided as follows:
PartnershipsIn addition, members of the Detachment often work with additional agencies to fulfill the mandate in the region. Due to its location in a border city on a major waterway, the Detachment works closely with both Canadian and American bodies including Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Coast Guard, the US Border Patrol, US Customs, US Immigration and Naturalization Services, the US Coast Guard, and Michigan State Police.
Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment involve themselves in several community events including the Annual Blind River Salute to Emergency Services, Sault Ste. Marie`s Bon Soo winter carnival and Community Day week, and support charity events such as the annual Walk for ALS.
