Kingston Detachment

Kingston DetachmentThe Kingston Detachment's complement has grown to 29 police officers, six public service employees and one civilian staff from the two members posted there when it first opened in 1932. Originally serving just the Kingston area, the Detachment was amalgamated in 1996 with what was then the Belleville, Brockville and Pembroke detachments.

It now serves Eastern Ontario from Trenton to Cardinal and north to Algonquin Park and Pembroke, including the cities of Belleville, Brockville, Kingston and Trenton.

The Kingston area is steeped in history and is the resting place of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. It is also known as the fresh water capital of North America and is a major port for cruises to the Thousand Islands. The Detachment is ideally situated in this city which is located halfway between Montreal and Toronto, Canada’s two largest cities.

The mandate of the Kingston Detachment is the enforcement of federal statutes and the Criminal Code. The enforcement units are all focused on the RCMP priorities of disrupting organized crime and terrorist activities and are divided as follows:

  • Customs and Excise Section
Investigates commercial smuggling enterprises including the illicit manufacture, importation, exportation and international transhipment of contraband goods, firearms, weapons and technology.

  • Proceeds of Crime (POC) Section
The IPOC units identify and restrain illicit wealth as well as investigating money laundering activities.

  • Drug Section
Works to identify, target, investigate, disrupt, and dismantle the international, national/regional, and local drug trafficking organizations that are having the most significant impact in Canada. The aim is to prevent the importation, production, traffic and use of illicit drugs.

  • Federal Enforcement Section
Combats organized crime through the enforcement of 270 federal statutes within four programs: Consumer Protection, Environmental Protection, Financial Loss to Government and Public Safety.

  • Criminal Intelligence Section
A key service which supports both RCMP senior management and enforcement operations in the Division. Through intelligence-led policing, the mandate of this service is to gather and share intelligence that will effectively deter, detect and disrupt organized crime, and provides strategic direction in the deployment of resources.

  • Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET)
The Kingston-based Thousand Islands IBET is one of 16 teams across the country and one of five in Ontario ('O' Division). These teams are multi-agency law enforcement bodies harmonizing Canadian and U.S. efforts to target cross-border criminal activity and a need to enhance border integrity.
