Fraud is probably the farthest thought from your mind as you peacefully surf the Internet from the comfort of your home or office. When a door-to-door salesman approaches, you likely expect nothing from him/her but a pitch for the newest fad in vacuum cleaners and when your favourite charity accepts a donation they are probably thankful for the contribution, not suspicious of the motive. Sadly, there is a criminal element who would capitalize on the trust we freely give.
The RCMP's Commercial Crime Program was organized to combat white-collar crime. Its purpose is to contribute to the security of the Canadian economy and protect Canadians and their governments from financial crimes perpetrated by organized crime and others. Commercial crimes include a variety of Internet, mail and personal fraud schemes as well as currency counterfeiting.
The concept of financial crime may seem remote, but it is an issue that should be taken seriously by Nova Scotians as every year thousands of individuals are victimized.
