Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is a provincial program offering members of the local community, in partnership with the media and law enforcement, an opportunity to provide crime-solving assistance to law enforcement. Crime Stoppers is a community response to crime and is not an extension of law enforcement. The program offers cash rewards to anonymous tipsters who telephone the Crime Stoppers tipsline with information regarding a serious crime or drug related offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

• How does the program work?

Any person with information on a serious crime can contact the Crime Stoppers office at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). If the information helps police solve a crime, the tipster will qualify for a cash award from $50.00 to $2,000.00.

• Will I have to testify in court?

No. Tipsters are interviewed over the phone about their knowledge of the crime, but will never be identified to police or asked to appear in court.

• How can a tipster be paid and still remain anonymous?

When a tipster calls Crime Stoppers he or she is given a tipster number which is their only identification. If the tipster qualifies for a cash award, the amount and payment is made by our community volunteers. The payment is made in a public place during daylight hours. The tipster has a description of who is going to pay them, the time and the place. The tipster will only have to give their number to receive the cash award.
