More ADPS Projects

ADPS is committed to working with Nova Scotia's Aboriginal and Black communities as we strive to strengthen our relationship with these communities. Some of the projects we have either initiated or had the honour of being involved with include:

Fatal Vision Goggles
Directed at all ages (though intended mainly for youth), the Fatal Vision Goggles are a training tool used to demonstrate the concept of impairment and the dangers of impaired driving. The goggles have been used in all five First Nation Communities (FNC’s) in Cape Breton and presentations were made to most schools attended by aboriginal youth as well as to various aboriginal adult groups and community committees. This RCMP crime prevention initiative has been well received in the aboriginal communities.

Recruiting Information Sessions
RCMP Recruitment Information Sessions were conducted at each of the five First Nations Communities (FNC) in Cape Breton. These presentations were both informative and offered encouragement to the increasing number of potential First Nations applicants that we have applying to the RCMP.

Prescription Pill Presentations
The misuse and abuse of prescription pills is one of the fastest growing drug problem in North America today. It is not just a First Nations problem, it is a problem in every community. An RCMP education program for aboriginal persons was developed in an attempt to reduce the number of prescriptions being issued and abused by aboriginal peoples.

Race Against Drugs Program
The Race Against Drugs program is a community-based drug and alcohol awareness program aimed at young people. The program has been delivered by the RCMP to over 1,000 of our First Nations Youth from our five FNC in Cape Breton.

D.A.R.E. Program
Delivered to first Nations communities in Nova Scotia.

NADACA Partnership
Native Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counseling Association (NADACA) is headquartered in Eskasoni, Nova Scotia. NADACA has a vast amount of resource material, including the most recent and best educational materials available on topics such as drug use/abuse, drug kits, sexual abuse, dating violence, bulling, etc. The RCMP in Nova Scotia have entered into a working partnership which enables all of our members working in First Nations communities to access NADACA's resource materials at no cost.

First Nations Policing Cop Card Series
This initiative was developed to raise the profile and awareness of RCMP officers currently working in each of the five FNC in Cape Breton. Featuring a photo and short profile, the cards were a great way for the people in the community to get to know the officers.

Parent Workshop on Bullying Program
Currently being delivered to First Nations people (both youth and adults) by RCMP, this program offers parents advice on how to help their children deal with bullying.

First Nations School Principals Project
T his project sees the principals of all First Nations School meet on a monthly basis. RCMP members invited to these meetings and are able to use this forum to identify any concerns that a school may have and address the concerns directly.

Project Movie Day Project
In partnership of NADACA (Native Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counseling Association) ADPS rented a movie theater. This project allowed youth from all five of the FNC in Cape Breton to attend an event (movie) outside of their communities and to interact with other FNC youth from neighboring FNC’s.

Kidz Printz Project
Colourful Kidzprintz fingerprint kits were distributed to each of the five RCMP units working in First Nations Communities. The kits are designed to encourage the child/studentto have his/her fingerprints taken on a colorful kit which holds their personal information and photos.

RCMP Awareness Day
This event was targeted at more than 200 high school youth at Eskasoni High School and TEC (Training Education Center). A total of six presenters did six 30 minute workshops during the day and one main presenter spoke for an hour to the general assembly. All topics were relevant to the issues faced by youth in Eskasoni including dating violence for both men and women, the effects of marijuana use, consequences of impaired driving, effects of smoking & chewing tobacco, oxycontins and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
