Auxiliary Constables in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Auxiliary Constable Program began in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1965 with a compliment of about 40 Constables. The following year an additional 40 were sworn in. At one time the Auxiliary Program boasted 200 on strength. Today we are proud to have 97 Auxiliary Constables across Newfoundland & Labrador, servicing 49 Detachment areas and contributing approximately 19,000 hours annually. According to a survey conducted with the RCMP across Canada, Newfoundland had the longest running Auxiliary Constable in the nation - A/Cst. J.J. Murphy from Placentia Detachment, with 32 plus years. He retired from the Auxiliary Program in 1997. We can also boast of the Auxiliary that volunteers the most hours on an annual basis nationally.

We have made several important strides within the Auxiliary Program over the last several years such as the implementation of the Civil Insurance Coverage, Scholarship opportunities for families of Auxiliary Members. Funding has also been provided to offer vaccinations, the upgrade of Kit & Clothing and to offer Workshops, which help familiarize Auxiliaries with the policing community. This program has become very popular within the communities of Newfoundland & Labrador where vacancies are rare & waiting lists long.

The Auxiliary Program in "B" Division has become an invaluable assistance to the RCMP Members of this province. The concept of "Community Policing" continues to grow and flourish within the policing community, with the Auxiliary Program setting a fine example of its success.

These wonderful volunteer organizations are the way of the future & in this aspect we feel privileged.
