General
Burin Peninsula District consists of detachments in Marystown and Grand Bank along with a satellite office in St. Lawrence.
The Burin Peninsula is situated in Southern Newfoundland. It consists of 42 communities with a population of approximately 23,000. It offers many amenities. The Golden Sands Park, located approximately 10 km from Marystown, attracts people from all over due to its sandy beach and camping/cottage facilities. As well, the towns of Burin and Grand Bank, two of Newfoundland’s oldest communities, offer excellent museums relating to the history of these communities. Frenchman’s Cove Park/golf course is an attractive feature that, likewise, appeals to many individuals. Moreover, many tourists pass through the area on their way to the French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon via Fortune where the ferry operates.
The primary industries on the Burin Peninsula include the Cow Head Fabrication Facility which primarily provides employment in shipbuilding and petroleum based industries, and the Fishing industry. Other general employment opportunities on the Burin Peninsula consist of the various retail outlets, teaching, nursing, and social work positions, and government departments.

The geographic challenges on the Burin Peninsula are somewhat unique to the District, as communities are spread out over great distances.

The District mandate presently involves addressing issues in the following areas:

COMMUNITY POLICING PROGRAMS
Alternative Measures Program
There are presently two active alternative measures committees within the District. The mandate of this program is to provide alternative resolutions to crime related behaviour of young persons and to allow rehabilitation of a young person without involving the court process. These committees consist of volunteers and partnerships between the police, health and community services and community members.
Auxiliary Policing Program
Burin Peninsula District has six auxiliary constable positions throughout the District. These positions are filled by volunteers from the communities and work closely with regular peace officers.
Burin Peninsula Ground Search and Rescue Team
The Burin Peninsula Ground Search and Rescue Team consists of volunteers from the communities within the District. The team has 20 active members and provides a valued service in relation to missing and lost persons.
Drug/Alcohol Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
The D.A.R.E. program is active in several schools throughout the District. D.A.R.E. is a ten week program which was developed by experts and is designed to provide elementary students with the skills that they need to resist drugs, violence and gangs. A regular member who has been specifically trained for this program delivers the instruction in the schools in co-operation with the school administration and school board.
Crime Prevention Committee
The Crime Prevention Committee is comprised of members from the community and police personnel. This Committee works with the police in identifying crime trends in the community and seeking solutions to such issues. During this year, the committee has focussed on seat belt education and enforcement and a drug education initiative for school students.
Crime Stoppers Committee
The Crime Stoppers Committee is comprised of members from the community and police personnel who work together to solve various crimes throughout the communities.
Grand Bank Youth Center
The Grand Bank Youth Center is a facility that provides activities, guidance and educational information to youth. The center was born and championed by members of the RCMP from a desire in the community of Grand Bank to offer a place for youth to go to prevent them from hanging around the community and becoming involved in drug/alcohol abuse and other illegal activities.
Marystown Youth Crime Prevention Committee
The Marystown Youth Crime Prevention Committee consists of volunteer teens and police personnel who meet to discuss and seek resolutions to issues facing youth today enabling them to choose healthier lifestyles. This committee has strived to bridge the gap between the police and youth community.
School Liaison Program
The school liaison program affords police officers an opportunity to attend all schools throughout the district and develop a positive relationship with students and to partner with students and staff to address issues of concern.
School Breakfast Program
The school breakfast program provides opportunity for police officers to attend school and prepare breakfast for students.
Family Violence Resource Center
The family violence resource center is located in Grand Bank and provides information and education to the community as part of the safe home, safe communities initiative.
Burin Peninsula District Recruiting
This District has a dedicated officer whose mandate is to provide information for any persons interested in a career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Information sessions are held at the District Office on a regular basis. Persons interested in learning more about a career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police should call the District Office.
RCMP Road Reports
Burin Peninsula District has formed a partnership with our local radio station CHCM which allows members to deliver road reports twice daily and to offer helpful crime prevention tips to the listening audience. The program is very well accepted by members of the general public.
Senior Advisory Committee
This committee was developed in partnership with seniors and other stakeholders in the community to address issues of concern to senior citizens. Several presentations have been made to seniors addressing crimes which they may fall victim to.
In addition, members are actively involved in the community as leaders for youth groups, coaches for various sports, and as members of numerous committees and boards throughout the District.
