In addition, police and peace officers should indicate if they would like to march in the funeral procession.

Visitation

  • When: Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and
    7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • Location: Hall of Colours - Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa
  • Parking at Beechwood is limited. Visitors can park at the Aviation Museum, 11 Aviation Parkway and a shuttle bus will be run every 30 minutes to and from the cemetery during visitation hours.

Funeral Procession

A funeral procession made up of RCMP members and police officers from partner agencies, will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Cartier Square Drill Hall, located at 2 Queen Elizabeth Drive in Ottawa, and will continue to the Notre Dame Basilica.

The route is as follows: Queen Elizabeth Drive onto Laurier Avenue, right on Elgin Street, right on Wellington Street, left onto Mackenzie Avenue, right onto Murray Street, and left on Sussex Drive to the Notre Dame Basilica.

Mustering instructions

  • When: Wednesday, January 27, 2010, 11:00 a.m. 
  • Location: Cartier Square Drill Hall, 2 Queen Elizabeth Drive

Order of Dress

  • RCMP: Review Order (long boots, breeches, scarlet tunic, felt hat [Stetson], brown gloves, stripped Sam Browne, medals/decorations and mourning ribbon). Officers marching in the funeral procession should wear their Stetson. Officers proceeding directly to the funeral should wear their forage cap.
  • All peace and police officers who have served on a UN Mission may bring and wear their blue beret.

Funeral Service

  • When: Wednesday, January 27, 2010, 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: Notre Dame Basilica, 385 Sussex Drive, Ottawa

Reception

  • When: Following the funeral service
  • Location: Ballroom, Chateau Laurier, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa

Directions

Beechwood National Memorial Centre: From Highway 417 exit at the Vanier Parkway. Proceed north on the Vanier Parkway. Turn right on Beechwood Avenue. Proceed to 280 Beechwood Avenue.

Transportation and Parking

There will be no parking at the Notre Dame Basilica. RCMP employees should check the Infoweb for transportation details. External partners can receive information on shuttle buses by sending an e-mail to: National_Peaceofficer_Memorialservice@rcmp-grc.gc.ca .

Interment

Following the police funeral, the Coates family will be attending a private interment.

Condolence Books

Three Tribute Centres have been created in honour of Chief Superintendent Douglas Coates and Sergeant Mark Gallagher. You are invited to sign a Book of Condolences in the lobby of the Nicholson Building (1200 Vanier Parkway), the lobby of the Leomont Building (155 McArthur Avenue), or at the public location at the Musical Ride Visitors’ Centre on the grounds of the Canadian Police College. The centre is open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
