Ottawa, March 20, 2008 – The RCMP welcomes the announcement today by the Minister of Public Safety of the creation of the RCMP Reform Implementation Council.

The establishment of the Implementation Council is in response to a recommendation from the Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP. The RCMP supported the work of the Task Force and looks forward to working with the Council.

RCMP Commissioner Elliott has made a commitment to addressing issues and making improvements in several key areas. "I have made it abundantly clear that the status quo is not an option", said Commissioner Elliott, "and I believe our people are ready for real and substantial change. The timing and the circumstances are right for the kind of change that will help us get better at what we do – to be more responsive to the citizens we serve, and more responsive to the needs of our own employees."

The Commissioner recognizes the value of the Council’s experience and welcomes its participation in assisting the RCMP. This is a unique opportunity for the RCMP to make significant and lasting improvements to the organization.

A Change Management Team, led by Assistant Commissioner Keith Clark, has been established to respond to key issues in several areas. This Team is actively engaging employees and encouraging them to provide comments and suggestions directly to the Team.
