Community Policing

RCMP involved in numerous community policing programs

Community policing is an effective tool which has been used for years by police forces around the world. It combines the best aspects of several time-proven policing techniques in order to combat not only crime, but also the fear of crime and the likelihood of crime. It is both a philosophical approach and a set of practical steps to carry out that approach.

Community policing allows police to work with the community and other organizations, both public and private, to address local concerns and move towards long-term solutions to crime-related problems. Sgt Doug Lockhart is in charge of Community Policing/Crime Prevention for “J” Division and says a critical element of community policing is the preventive focus. “If a community is having a crime problem, we must have an effective and lasting solution. We develop strategies in partnership with the very people affected to try to deal with issues not just after they happen, but before as well.” Community policing is a partnership between the police and the community, sharing in the delivery of police services. With the valuable community cooperation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police pledges to do several things.

Uphold the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, provide a professional standard of service; ensure all policing services are provided courteously and impartially; work with the community and other agencies to prevent or resolve problems that affect the community’s safety and quality of life; act within the Canadian justice system to address community problems; and promote a creative and responsive environment to allow all RCMP members to deliver community policing services.

Community policing programs are extensive and there truly is something for every person to be involved in. “The RCMP’s goal is “Safe Homes, Safe Communities,” says Lockhart. “Public safety isn’t just the police’s responsibility, it’s everyone’s. Community Based Policing is a partnership between the police and the community, formed to identify, prioritize and solve local crime and disorder problems thereby improving the quality of life. More than just a concept, community policing is a working philosophy with both a goal and a process encompassing a vast array of strategies, programs and tactics.”
