In the January 13, 2009 editorial of the Moncton Times & Transcript, the editor provides commentary regarding Moncton Councillor Daniel Bourgeois’ proposal for a study on policing options for the Codiac Region. While there are several policing issues raised which are worthy of discussion, there is some clarification which is required surrounding suggestions that the Village of Salisbury might expect an additional bill in relation to the recent arrests in the area.
The newspaper is correct in the statement that, "It can’t have come cheaply." Notwithstanding some of the less obvious costs of organized crime on society, investigating criminal organizations costs money. These are complex investigations which require patience, expertise and a significant commitment of resources to be successful. That said, neither Salisbury nor any other community, directly or indirectly impacted by these crimes, will receive any surprise bill. Combating organized crime is a priority for both the federal and provincial governments. This investigation is being managed within existing RCMP budgets. In the end, the RCMP is confident that this investigation will make a difference for the citizens of southeastern New Brunswick.
