RCMP investigate illegal cigarette seizure, Saint-Léonard, N.B.

2010/1/21

RCMP Customs and Excise members in J Division are conducting a follow-up investigation into a contraband tobacco seizure made by members of the J Division Roving Traffic Unit earlier this month.

On January 8, 2010, police intercepted an eastbound passenger vehicle on Highway # 2 near Saint-Léonard, N.B. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 45 year old Montreal man was found to be in possession of 184, 000 contraband cigarettes. The man was arrested and later released. The investigation is ongoing.

The incident in question was the first of two large contraband tobacco seizures made in the Saint-Léonard area in the past two weeks. Another vehicle was intercepted on January 10, carrying 180, 000 illegal cigarettes. The two seizures are not believed to be connected.

“Disrupting the contraband tobacco trade is an RCMP priority, and it’s important to the well-being of our communities,” said Cpl. Robert Fullerton. “We encourage anyone with information regarding tobacco smuggling or illegal cigarettes to contact police.”

Please contact your local police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) if you have any information regarding this incident or other criminal activity.
