RCMP to exercise zero-tolerance approach during Operation Christmas, Fredericton, N.B.

2008/12/11

The RCMP and other law enforcement agencies throughout New Brunswick will exercise a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone caught drinking and driving, driving aggressively or not wearing a seatbelt over the month of December as part of Operation Christmas.

High visibility checkstop operations will also be conducted by the RCMP throughout the Province beginning on December 12 to remind motorists that applying safe driving practices is to everyone's benefit.

This coincides with the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety's recently announced media campaign on drinking and driving. Drinking and driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada resulting in 900 deaths a year and 30% of all roadway fatalities.

Approximately ninety people lose their lives every year in New Brunswick in motor vehicle collisions. Not wearing seatbelts or not wearing them properly is a contributing factor in 45% of all fatalities.
