Statement by Superintendant Marlene Snowman - Officer in charge of Codiac Regional RCMP, Moncton, N.B.

2014/6/6

Good morning and thank you for being here.

Early this morning at approximately 12:10, 24-year-old Justin Bourque was arrested without incident in a wooded area near the intersection of Wheeler Boulevard and Mountain Road. While police recovered weapons within the perimeter, the accused had none on him at the time of the arrest.

Justin Bourque is a suspect in the shooting incident which resulted in the death of three of our members and hospitalized two others.

He is in custody and charges are pending. With his arrest, the perimeter set up in the Moncton North area has been lifted and residents are free to come and go as they please. I know this was inconvenient for many of you and I would like to thank the affected residents for their patience and cooperation over the past two days.

It has also been a very challenging 30 hours for the officers who worked around the clock to get the job done.

One thing I have heard over and over is the resilience of our men and women to continue forward and focus to get results despite their tremendous loss.

I can't tell you how proud I am of them. While our members are deeply affected by this tragedy, I am proud of the dedication and professionalism that has been evident throughout this ordeal.

We certainly did not do this alone. Our law enforcement partners from across New Brunswick assisted in this search and members of the RCMP arrived from neighbouring provinces, ready to hit the ground.

Thank you as well to the media and citizens who were sharing important information via social media such as putting their outside lights on or not sharing specific details about where we were working. Now that we have the suspect in custody we have to focus on the future and moving forward to restore a sense of normalcy to our community.

It will take some time to heal but together we will get there. None of us can ever be prepared for this type of situation.

We accomplished what we set out to do. That was to ensure the public was safe and that we arrested the person responsible for these tragic events without further injury to our officers.

Thank you.
