Community Priorities

In 2008, we obtained the top policing priorities from our community partners through direct and ongoing consultation. The policing priorities were identified as drugs, youth, traffic and ATV’s. District 6 RCMP added Community Wellness and the Crime Reduction Strategy as our personal ambitions and work with communities in programs such as SAFETY, Development of Community Consultative Groups and other Community Wellness Programs.

A two-member General Investigation and Intelligence Section, along with other members of District 6, were instrumental in the execution of a number of search warrants which resulted in the seizure of drugs, prescription medication, firearms and stolen property. As part of our Crime Reduction Strategy we placed an emphasis on monitoring the offenders through their probation/prohibition periods ensuring they are complying with the conditions of their orders.

Our Traffic Services Unit remained very active in 2008 with a focus on prevention, education and enforcement throughout our coverage area. As in previous years the deer population continues to thrive and drivers are encouraged to slow down especially during dusk and dawn.

As part of the All-Terrain Vehicle initiative, members of the Off Road Vehicle Safety Team, assisted by our members, gave presentations to students on the safe use of ATV’s and the rules and regulations governing Off Road Vehicles. As well members increased their enforcement of the Off Road Vehicle Act resulting in more infractions and warnings being issued.

This year, our district welcomed a criminal intelligence analyst whose mandate is to conduct crime analysis in support of the District 6 Crime Reduction Strategy. The goal is to prevent and deter crime, apprehend and prosecute offenders, rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders and change the reality and perception of crime within the community. District 6 is well on its way to becoming the safest District in the province, contributing to the Division’s goal of making New Brunswick the safest province in Canada.

Our members were very active with youth in our District’s schools throughout the past year with initiatives such as the DARE program, bike rodeos, the Top Cop Reading Program and Positive Choices Program where students learn about maintaining a positive self-esteem, bullying, internet safety, tobacco, alcohol and drugs, as well as relationships.

Our Community Program Officer submitted an application to the Mounted Police Foundation on behalf of the Eel Ground Community Action Committee and was successful in securing $5000 toward the Youth Recreational Centre which will open in the near future.

The program “PARTY” (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) was held at the Community Arena in Doaktown in the spring of ‘08. As part of the Drug Prevention initiative, District 6 members participated in various programs including a Prescription Drug Awareness Night in Eel Ground. As well a Prescription Drug/Street Drug Awareness Booth was set up at area High Schools.

A “Positive Ticketing” Program for children who were making positive choices within District 6 area was created. Children who were wearing bicycle helmets, participating in outdoor physical activity and/or playing well with others were rewarded with water bottles, crime prevention bracelets and candy suckers. The children were given the opportunity to tour the police car and ask the officer questions about their job and uniform.

Look Ahead

In 2009-2010, District 6 Miramichi will remain committed to our goal of providing Safe Homes, Safe Communities by being strategically focused and intelligence-led. We will work with our partners and communities as we develop these strategic plans that will address issues of common concern. Community Justice Forums will be among the initiatives.

We look forward to increasing public safety by working with our communities, schools and policing partners as we seek to reduce the number of youth that become involved in crime, either as suspects or victims. The RCMP will continue to be involved in youth programs such as DARE, Safe Grad, the PARTY Program, Kidz Printz, RESPECT, the organizing of benefit sporting events and safety talks amongst others. School safety is paramount and we remain committed to multi-agency joint training initiatives with our many partners in and out of the education system.

Through prevention, education, intelligence gathering and enforcement, we will continue to develop and implement initiatives that will be put in place to improve safety on our highways. We will continue to partner with local media in addressing issues of concern on our highways as well as identifying specific and planned traffic law enforcement weekends throughout the year.

The members and staff of the RCMP will continue to address the ongoing drug problem which faces many of our communities in partnership with other agencies, concerned community members and available resources. We will further develop upon our level of integration with other agencies and other units to maximize the overall effectiveness of our resources and operations.

Our members remain very active, committed and involved in numerous worthwhile community initiatives throughout our coverage area. Many of our members continue to belong to various community organizations, government and agency committees, board of directors, school groups, and coaching opportunities. Often such commitment occurs on our members’ personal time, away from the office and their regular duties.

We continue to improve technology in our police vehicles including new radar units, laser radar, new in-car video systems and new mobile workstations allowing our members to remain in our communities while responding to, conducting and concluding investigations. This will permit us to remain on the cutting edge of police technology while providing a high quality of service delivery to our communities.
