Manitoba East District has 17 detachments. The northern area presents major challenges in terms of access to certain communities. Four detachments are known as fly-in detachments because they have no road access during the summer months. These include: Brokenhead, Blood Vein, Poplar River and Berens River. RCMP officers and their families pack up their gear on a weekly basis, so that they can police these remote communities.
The community offices of Altona and Gypsumville outline the southwest portion of the Manitoba East Service Area, from south to north. This area offers some of Manitoba’s best fertile agricultural land and is used to produce either cereal crops or pastures for farmers. However, this area is challenged not only by its dense population, but also by the weather. RCMP officers quite often have to contend with bad weather conditions such as high winds and floods like that of Spring 1997.
Winter driving conditions make road conditions sometimes hazardous. Transportation for RCMP officers is composed of access to planes, water transport, ATV's, and snowmobiles.
