Ph: (204) 349-8035
Fax: (204) 349-8845

Location:
The detachment provides policing services to the communities of Falcon Beach and West Hawk Lake (which includes Caddy Lake and Star Lake) in the southern half of Whiteshell Provincial Park, and East Braintree, Prawda, Spruce Siding, and Hadashville in the RM of Reynolds.

RCMP Detachment:
The Falcon Beach detachment consists of one corporal, two constables, and one part-time Public Service Employee. The area is policed using a car, truck, 4-wheel ATV, snowmobile, boat, and foot patrols.

Community-based problem solving:

Often, there are groups already in place to deal with ongoing concerns or community projects. The following details what community challenges are being addressed by the members of the RCMP in partnership with their community. The major working groups include:

Snowmobile Safety Program: Each winter, the detachment, in partnership with Snoman and Manitoba Conservation, embarks on a snowmobile safety campaign. This project involves joint snowmobile patrols with Manitoba Conservation along the area's many lakes and trails, safety presentations to schools, and the distribution of snowmobile awareness material throughout the area.

Cottage Watch: Manitoba Conservation funds two positions each autumn for cottage watch activities in the Whiteshell. This detachment, in partnership with patrol members, attempts to identify crime trends so patrols can be focussed on areas of higher risk during the months that cottagers are away.

Restorative and alternative justice:

Nationwide, members of the RCMP are involved in alternative justice processes, whether it is volunteering as facilitators or sitting on steering committees. Each community may embrace a different form of restorative justice, be it community justice forums, circle sentencing or mediation.

Community Justice Committee: The detachment works closely with the Falcon Beach and Area Justice Committee to pursue alternatives to formal court proceedings. The committee consists of 11 members and meets a minimum of four times a year and as required. Youth and adult criminal activities are referred to the committee in lieu of formal court proceedings. The committee seeks input from the offenders, their families, and the victims. Their dispositions often involve offender apologies, restitution, and community service.

Alternative Justice: We are involved in providing a number of alternatives to formal court proceedings. In many cases, investigators find matters are best dealt with by parents, schools, and other officials. In these cases, members are encouraged to deal with matters in the most suitable manner, taking into account the needs of those involved.

Crime prevention:

Members of the RCMP are involved with a number of programs designed to prevent crime in our communities through both indirect and direct intervention. From school talks to youth initiatives to community safety plans, the goal of crime prevention programs is to target the roots of potential criminal and social problems. Members of the RCMP are involved in the following initiatives:

Drug Education & Prevention: The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program has been presented to all Grade 6 and Grade 7 students in the detachment area. DARE teaches kids how to recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs.

Joint Enforcement with Manitoba Conservation: As a large portion of Whiteshell Provincial Park is located within our policing area, members are frequently engaged in joint enforcement and prevention patrols with Manitoba Conservation Officers. These involve vehicle, bicycle, snowmobile, ATV, boat, and foot patrols of the many lakes, campgrounds, and wilderness areas of the south Whiteshell.

Kidz Printz Child Identification: Members assist parents with recording vital information about their children. Kidz Printz Child Identification Kits are an invaluable, proactive resource, that include a child's profile information, a recent photo, a DNA sample, and a non-toxic, disposable forensic ink strip to record the child's fingerprints.

Search and Rescue: Members of this detachment have a primary responsibility for coordinating search and rescue activities throughout the detachment area. In partnership with the Southeast Whiteshell volunteer fire department, detachment members have been trained as part of the area’s voluntary search team.

Joint Enforcement with the Department of Transportation: The Falcon Beach Detachment is responsible for patrolling the Trans Canada Highway from Spruce Siding Road right up to the Manitoba/Ontario border. The detachment works closely with the Inspectors at the West Hawk Highway Inspection Station, located on the Manitoba/Ontario border, to enforce the Highway Traffic Act and the Commercial Vehicles Act to increase safety on our public roadways.

Bicycle Safety: Detachment members are involved in presenting a bike safety program to the students in the detachment area. The presentation focuses on safe riding practices, the rules of the road, and use of safety equipment. Following the presentation, the detachment hosts a bike rodeo for all involved.

The Whiteshell Echo: The Echo is a newspaper published six times per year by the Whiteshell District Association to keep cottagers and residents informed of developments and activities in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Each issue features a police report for the detachment which outlines crime trends and suggests crime prevention strategies on a variety of topics.

Police-community relations:

Without a solid base upon which to work, the police cannot hope to build the necessary partnerships with the community to prevent crime and to solve community problems. Members of the RCMP strive daily to build those bridges by appreciating the needs of the communities in which they work and live. Their commitment to the community goes beyond simple participation as residents, but also as active members of the community. Members of the RCMP are involved in the following initiatives:

  • Auxiliary Constable Program
  • Red Serge Duty
  • School Liaisons

Quality service through strategic partnerships:

The community also benefits directly and indirectly from strategic partnerships that the RCMP forms with other law enforcement and governmental agencies as well as with as with other community groups. Several unique associations have been formed:

  • Beausejour Child and Family Services
  • South Eastman Mental Health - Crisis Response Service
  • North Eastman Health Association
  • Agape House
  • Chamber of Commerce
  • Manitoba Conservation
  • Rural Municipality of Reynolds Reeve and Council
  • Department of Transportation
  • The Whiteshell District Association and The Whiteshell Echo
