The Fairmont Training Academy was first occupied by the RCMP in 1920, having previously served as a private school for boys in 1912 and a military hospital during World War I. Originally named “Fairmont Barracks”, it served as Divisional Headquarters and housed approximately 150 men. In the early 1950s, it was renovated in order to utilize the site as a Training Facility. This served the needs of RCMP Training for almost four decades. The decision was made in the early 90s to find a new site, due to the acknowledged shortcomings of the Fairmont location. The search for a new training facility began. With the announcement by the Department of National Defence that Canadian Forces Base, Chilliwack would be closing in 1998, a study was commissioned for the relocation of “E” Division Training, to Chilliwack. Senior RCMP Management “E” Division on December 9, 1997 approved findings and recommendations that lands and buildings, including the facility identified as Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School (CFOCS) be acquired, and refitted to suit RCMP Training requirements. The CFOCS facility in Chilliwack was custom-built and provides an ideal environment for implementing RCMP Training programs. The facility’s official opening was December 4th, 2001, and was named “Pacific Region Training Centre”. |
