Badges of Rank and Appointment

The Act of 1873 creating the North-West Mounted Police stipulated a rank structure by authorizing the appointment of a commissioner, one or more superintendents, a paymaster, quartermaster, surgeon, veterinary surgeon and the enlistment of constables and sub-constables. Distinctive insignia used to designate rank imitated the British with the use of stars and crowns, read in conjunction with braid and lace worn on collars and sleeves.

Today rank is still identified by the use of crowns and stars but other symbols have also been incorporated, depending on the rank or appointment.
