Ontario – success stories

Through innovative initiatives and programs, the RCMP works with its partners, connects with communities and supports its people in order to keep Canadians safe.

Creating a workplace well-being culture

The Ontario RCMP has embarked on several ambitious healthy workplace initiatives. Multiple tiers of training and activities aimed at increasing the knowledge and skills of Ontario RCMP personnel to enhance their individual and collective resiliency have been initiated. The first tier focuses on informal conflict management. Our informal conflict management practitioner initiated a culture shift towards conflict competency — a precursor to respectful and healthy workplaces — by facilitating more than 50 two-day workshops to more than 1,000 employees. Since the practitioner joined the Ontario RCMP, individual and group conflict interventions have helped resolve almost 200 complaints (the majority through coaching). The second tier saw a team of employees provide positive mental health guidance and interactive one-hour sessions to almost all employees across the province. The third tier, championed by the executive team and officer core, delivered the national Road to Mental Readiness training to more than 1,000 employees. Utilizing both peer presenters and mental health professionals, these sessions expanded the depth and breadth of the Ontario RCMP's mental health dialogue with and among employees and will continue throughout the upcoming year. The fourth tier involves developing RCMP unit and detachment-level healthy workplace strategies. A healthy workplace coordinator provides ongoing guidance and assistance whenever needed. Units and detachments are enthusiastically approaching this new culture centred on workplace wellness.
