Southern Alberta District General Investigation Section charge male after officer involved shooting near Cochrane

On April 16, 2024, a Cochrane RCMP officer attempted a traffic stop in a rural area near Cochrane. While attempting to effect an arrest on the driver, a confrontation ensued, resulting in the officer discharging their service pistol. The suspect suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of an investigation by the Southern Alberta District General Investigation Section and Cochrane RCMP into the incidents leading up to the officer involved shooting, charges have been pursued.

A 27-year-old individual, a resident of Morley, Alta., has been charged with the following offences:

  • Assaulting peace officer with a weapon x 2;
  • Flight from peace officer;
  • Resisting peace officer;
  • Firearm: unauthorized possession;
  • Firearm in Motor Vehicle;
  • Firearm possession contrary to prohibition order;
  • Dangerous operation conveyance;
  • Weapon: unauthorized possession;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime

After a judicial interim release Hearing, the 27-year-old individual was remanded into custody and will be appearing in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on April 19, 2024, and Tsuut'ina Nation, Alta., Court of Justice on April 19, 2024. As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided. The investigation continues and further charges may be pursued.
