Two men charged following seizure of explosive substances, drugs

Two men from Rexton, N.B. have been charged in connection with the seizure of explosive substances, firearms, weapons and drugs, following the execution of a search warrant in Rexton N.B.

On the morning of March 14, 2020, members of the Southeast District RCMP's Crime Reduction Unit, Richibucto RCMP and the RCMP's Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at a home on North Street.

During the search, police seized explosive substances, a quantity of drugs, firearms and other weapons. A 35-year-old man and a 40-year-old man were arrested during a traffic stop near the residence.

On March 18, 35-year-old Malcolm Tyler Hannay and 40-year-old Gerard Chevarie appeared in Moncton Provincial Court. Hannay has been charged with the following:

  • Trafficking of methamphetamine
  • Production of illegal cannabis by-products
  • Possession of an explosive substance
  • Three counts of possession of a weapon while prohibited
  • Three counts of unlawful storage of a firearm
  • Three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm
  • Reckless discharge of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm without a licence
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public

Forty-year-old Gerard Chevarie has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of an explosive substance
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
  • Driving while prohibited

Malcolm Tyler Hannay has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on April 1. Gerard Chevarie was released and is scheduled to return to court on June 9.

The investigation is ongoing.
