February 17, 2020
Springdale, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

A lone snowmobiler, who went for a ride on the evening of February 14, 2020, and became stuck in a wooded trail due to poor weather, was rescued.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., Springdale RCMP received the call. Local community members assisted in the search and the snowmobiler was located safely after several hours.

Springdale RCMP reminds snowmobilers of the following safety tips while riding snowmobile:

  • Always check the weather forecast and plan for additional days.
  • Know the area where you are travelling. If you are not familiar with the area, speak with someone more experienced.
  • Make sure you wear bright-colored warm clothing and gear, and be mindful of the symptoms of hypothermia.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Carry an emergency medical kit, emergency tool kit (with spark plugs, belt, flares), extra food, and supplies to make a fire.
  • Always carry a means of communication. If you travel outside cellular phone coverage, carry an emergency communication device like a Satellite phone, a SPOT or 2-way satellite communication device.
  • Tell people where you are going. Let them know of your destination and the route you are going to take. If you change your plans, ensure you have informed someone.
  • Operate your snowmobile within your capacities and always sober! Operating a snowmobile while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs is accompanied with the same Criminal Code charges as driving a vehicle while impaired.

Springdale RCMP wishes everyone an enjoyable and safe riding season and sends a special thanks to all the community members who assisted the police in locating the snowmobiler safely.
