The hustle and bustle of the Christmas shopping season also comes with an increase in shoplifting and theft from motor vehicles. In the true spirit of giving, the Airdrie RCMP Crime Reduction Unit gifted some of Airdrie's most deserving clients with court dates, fines and criminal records.

Project Grinch was a proactive initiative in which officers deployed to numerous businesses within the City of Airdrie and in Rocky View County. Extensive patrols were completed along with other investigational techniques in an attempt to combat crime.

Members worked closely with loss prevention officers, mall security and other business personnel to identify prolific property offenders, shoplifters and suspicious people and activity.

With increased traffic in the parking lots of businesses during the month of December, one objective of this project was to disrupt property crime, specifically theft from motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles.

The results for Project Grinch are as follows:

  • 49 Criminal Code charges ranging from obstruction, breaching conditions, possession of drugs, firearms possession and possession of stolen property.
  • 3 Controlled Drugs and Substance Act charges; 8.1 grams of methamphetamine and 3.6 grams of fentanyl seized with a street value of approximately $1200
  • Execution of 90 warrants
  • 4 Form 21 warrants executed, totalling $8362.00 in fines
  • $3340.00 of fines issued
  • Recovered stolen property with a value of $18, 024.42
  • Numerous weapons seized, which included a knife, machete, collapsible baton, bear spray, a loaded SKS semi automatic rifle with 8 rounds in the magazine, a loaded shotgun, a loaded rifle and 2 knives.
