Young boy dead after recreational vehicle goes through ice in Clarenville

A 10-year-old boy died yesterday in Clarenville after the side-by-side recreational vehicle he was in with his father went through the ice on a pond. Clarenville RCMP received the call for assistance yesterday afternoon. Police officers responded, as well as the Clarenville Fire Department, Triple Bay Eagles Ground Search and Rescue and paramedics. Community members also provided assistance.

The father tried unsuccessfully to get his son out of the water but the boy became trapped when the vehicle was submerged. He was rushed to hospital once responders were able to remove him from the water. It is estimated he was underwater for an hour.

The boy was pronounced dead at about 7:00 p.m. last evening. The RCMP extends deepest condolences to his family and loved ones and thanks all who assisted with the rescue effort.
