Woman charged with attempted murder in stabbing incident

A 54-year-old woman from Chipman, N.B., has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing incident in Salmon River last evening.

On January 16, 2019, at about 7:45 p.m., members of the Minto RCMP responded to a report of a woman having been stabbed. A 40-year-old woman was taken to hospital with multiple wounds.

A 54-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man were arrested at a residence in Chipman later the same evening. The woman was held in custody, and the man was questioned and later released.

On January 17, Joanne Alice Lewis appeared in Burton Provincial Court and was charged with attempted murder.

She has been remanded into custody and sent for a psychiatric evaluation. She is scheduled to return to court on February 14 at 1:30 p.m.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing by New Brunswick RCMP's Major Crime Unit.
