Following a carjacking and assault of a woman that happened yesterday around noon in Clarenville, police officers from Clarenville Detachment conducted an extensive patrol in search of the suspect and the vehicle.

That afternoon, Clarenville RCMP observed the stolen vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway. The officer was able to confirm the identity of the driver and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle did not stop for police and turned onto Route 210, heading down the Burin Peninsula.

The officer, who did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety, contacted Burin Peninsula RCMP to inform the vehicle was heading in their direction.

The vehicle was spotted a number of times by officers from Clarenville and Burin Peninsula Detachments, who patrolled Route 210. The man would not stop for police and continued driving in a dangerous manner.

The vehicle was found abandoned near the exit to Monkstown. The man had departed on foot. At approximately 4:45 p.m., Police Dog Services attended the scene and conducted a search.

A short time later, Police Service Dog Grinch successfully located the suspect, who was hiding in some bushes. Forty-year-old Timothy Hackett of English Harbour East was arrested and taken into police custody.

He attends court today to face a number of criminal charges including robbery with violence, assault, break and enter into a residence, possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, numerous breaches of a court order and two breaches of a probation order.

Officers recovered the vehicle and the investigation is continuing.
