Sylvan Lake RCMP respond to possible oil field theft in Eckville

On April 6, 2019, at approximately 8:15 a.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a possible battery theft from an oil field site at 54 Ave. in Eckville, Alta..

Police arrived on scene and located a male suspect asleep in a truck. A sledgehammer and a large canister of bear spray was observed on the front seat. The member placed a spike belt out, and waited for backup. A confrontation occurred between the male suspect and the member, with the member discharging his service pistol.

The male suspect has been transported to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.

The member was not injured.

There is no concern for public safety at this time.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken carriage of the investigation, and all questions should be directed to ASIRT.
