August 5, 2019
Stettler, Alberta

News release

August 2, 2019 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Stettler RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Secondary Highway 601, near Pheasantback Golf Course. The vehicle began travelling at excessive speeds and failed to stop for police.

The driver and lone occupant was known to police, and identified as a 23-year-old male. A police pursuit was not initiated given the potential risk to the public. Police later attended the male's residence where he brandished a shot gun. The Stettler RCMP with the assistance of the Bashaw RCMP contained the area, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service were deployed. The male was taken into custody without incident after a ten hour stand off.

The male appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded in custody on the following charges:

  • Flight from Police x 2
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle x 2
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Breach of a Release Document x 7
  • Possession of Methamphetamine
  • Offences under provisions of the Traffic Safety Act

The male is set to appear in Stettler provincial court on August 8, 2019.
