With the August long weekend just around the corner, many residents across Saskatchewan will be on the road travelling to their holiday destinations. Saskatchewan RCMP are reminding all motorists to take extra care when driving, so everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Over the August 3-6 long weekend in 2018, Saskatchewan RCMP laid 30 charges for impaired operation by alcohol and zero charges with impaired operation by drugs in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction.

Impairment by drugs and alcohol results in a shorter attention span, an altered perception of time and distance, and slower reaction times. In 2018, the presence of drugs or alcohol was a factor in 36.3 per cent of all fatal collisions in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction.

"As a police officer, I have seen firsthand, the devastating impact impaired driving leaves on families," says Cpl. Brian Ferguson, Saskatchewan RCMP Provincial Drug Recognition Expert and Training Coordinator. "Addressing impaired driving continues to be a priority for the RCMP."

The RCMP, the Province of Saskatchewan and municipal police services have combined efforts to train front line officers in detecting and removing impaired drivers from roads across Saskatchewan. Targeted enforcement projects with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan Unit have been established across the province to conduct more check stops and high visibility enforcement on roads.

Officers would like to remind the public that impaired driving, of any kind, is completely avoidable and illegal. When motorists follow safe driving practices, such as planning ahead and appointing a designated driver, the risks of death and injury to themselves and others are reduced. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911 immediately.

By practicing these few simple tips, we can help ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
