November 5, 2019
Faro, Ross River, Yukon

News release

The RCMP would like to urge residents of Faro and Ross River to use caution when buying or selling items online on social media like Facebook, or when responding to advertisements. Remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Here are some ways you can protect yourself from scams:

  • Never give out your personal (social insurance number, date of birth, driver's license, etc) or banking information over the telephone.
  • DO NOT be lured into using payment methods other than the options recommended by a trusted Internet site. Do not pay by sending cash, money transfers, money orders, or bitcoin.
  • DO NOT be pressured to send money to take advantage of a "special offer or deal".

If you are a victim of fraud or suspect you have been scammed, report it to your local police, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by going to their website (www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca) or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
