RCMP responds to questions on alcohol consumption and operating recreational vehicles

St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

The RCMP discourages the consumption of alcohol or drugs of any amount prior to operating motorized vehicles of any type. The provincial legislation pertaining to the consumption of alcohol by drivers of snowmobiles and ATVs indicates drivers should not be "under the influence" of intoxicating substances. While it does not reference zero tolerance, the RCMP does recommend zero consumption prior to operating any motorized vehicles.

Many factors, including body weight and metabolism, determine how one is affected by alcohol or drugs. The safest route is always not to consume prior to operation of skidoos or ATVs. Police officers must evaluate all the factors of each situation, including indicators of impairment, and determine the most appropriate action, which might include issuing a summary offence ticket under the provincial statues and regulations or impaired driving provisions of the Criminal Code. Members have to ensure that elements of any offence are met prior to the issuance of any summary offense ticket or Criminal Code charge.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a wonderful province to enjoy the outdoors and we encourage everyone to do so safely.
