RCMP NL seizes 3000 cartons contraband tobacco

RCMP NL Federal Serious & Organized Crime - Gander initiated an investigation two weeks ago into suspected possession of contraband tobacco, contrary to the Provincial Revenue Administration Act, as well as the Federal Excise Act, 2001. Yesterday, three individuals were arrested in Grand Falls-Windsor. The search of two transport trucks and a passenger van resulted in the seizure of 3000 cartons of contraband tobacco, along with a quantity of Canadian currency.

One carton of contraband tobacco can sell for $40-$50 on the street, putting the street value of the tobacco seized in the range of $120,000 to $150,000.

The three individuals have been released and the investigation is continuing. Charges are anticipated.

RCMP NL Federal Serious and Organized Crime targets criminal activity involving national security, transnational and serious organized crime and cyber crime throughout the entire province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
