Prince Albert RCMP – Second Degree Murder

Shortly after midnight on December 26, 2019, Prince Albert RCMP received a report of an injured 17-year-old female at the Wahpeton Dakota Nation Health Centre. Upon arrival, investigators determined her injuries were the result of an assault and immediately returned to the residence on the Wahpeton Dakota Nation where the assault occurred.

At the residence, RCMP officers located Zellall Highway, a 19-year-old male resident of the Wahpeton Dakota Nation, suffering what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. Officers transported Zellall Highway to the local clinic where he was pronounced deceased by EMS.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect who was located and arrested at a nearby residence. Due to the nature of the injuries he sustained during the assault he was then transported by EMS to hospital in Prince Albert for treatment. The 17-year-old female was also transported by EMS to hospital in Prince Albert for treatment of injuries received during the assault.

Nathan Waditaka has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder s. 235(1) CC, Aggravated Assault s. 268 CC, Sexual Assault s. 271 CC. He will make his first court appearance on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 9:30 a.m.

The investigation continues with the assistance of the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit – North, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, and the Saskatchewan RCMP General Investigation Section – Saskatoon. An autopsy will be conducted Monday, December 30, 2019 in Saskatoon.
