Officer Involved Shooting in Cochrane

December 7, 2019
Cochrane, Alberta

News release

One adult male is deceased following a lengthy barricaded situation involving the RCMP Emergency Response Team, which ended with a male shot outside a residence.

Last night shortly after 7 p.m., Cochrane RCMP members were called to a male's residence due to concerns for his well-being, and that of his partner. He was believed to have numerous firearms on his person. When RCMP arrived, the male barricaded himself inside his residence and was unwilling to cooperate with police directions. A negotiator from the Emergency Response Team was unsuccessful in convincing the man to exit the home peacefully.

Alternate means were deployed to force the man out. The male exited the residence and a confrontation occurred that resulted in a member of the Emergency Response Team discharging a service weapon, injuring the man. The man was transported to the hospital but declared deceased while en route. No officers were injured and no other civilians were directly involved in the confrontation.

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting and the actions of police. The RCMP will continue to investigate the actions of the man and the events leading up to the confrontation with police.

The Alberta RCMP will not be commenting further on this incident. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099
