Man pleads guilty to attempted murder

A 49-year-old man from Bas-Caraquet has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in relation to a stabbing that occurred on April 10, 2019, at a residence in Bas-Caraquet, N.B.

On April 10, shortly after 7:20 p.m., members from the Caraquet RCMP responded to a report of a woman being assaulted at a residence on Rue Saint-Paul. When police arrived they found a 45-year-old woman with what appeared to be stab wounds. She was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life- threatening injuries. A short time later, a man was located outside the residence and was arrested. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On April 11, 2019, David Chiasson was charged with attempted murder. He appeared in Caraquet Provincial Court on April 12, and was remanded into custody.

Chiasson appeared in Caraquet Provincial Court on July 31, 2019, and plead guilty to attempted murder. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on October 3, 2019, at 1:30 p.m.

The court has imposed a publication ban on the name of the victim.

The New Brunswick RCMP's Major Crime Unit continues to investigate the incident.
