News release

On July 31, 2019, at 11:15 pm, officers from the Hamiota RCMP received a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision that occurred on Highway 83, located approximately a half-kilometre south of Provincial Road 355, near the Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

The investigation has determined that a vehicle, being driven by a 43-year-old female from Rapid City, was travelling southbound on Highway 83 when it struck a 17-year-old male, from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation, who was walking on the highway.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and then immediately called 911.

The 17-year-old was pronounced deceased on scene. The 43-year-old female driver and her 23-year-old male passenger were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

RCMP believe a pickup truck, possibly white in color, came across the scene immediately afterwards and stopped but did not remain at the scene. Officers would like to speak to the driver of this pickup truck as they may have information that could assist in the investigation.

Hamiota RCMP along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionists continue to investigate.

The RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or are able to identify the driver of the white pickup truck, to call the Hamiota RCMP at 204-764-2732, call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
