Haines Junction RCMP have seen an alarming increase in impaired driving charges recently. Since April 2019, police have charged 7 people with impaired driving related offences, all of which occurred in the Haines Junction area. The detachment would normally see 5 – 6 people charged per year.

Police are concerned as many of the blood alcohol levels are over 3 times the legal limit, and are occurring at times of the day when the community is busy with tourist traffic, and many pedestrians.

All but one of the charges are a result of concerned Haines Junction residents calling in suspected impaired drivers.

Haines Junction RCMP will be increasing traffic enforcement surrounding impaired driving over the coming months, including more check-stops and targeting enforcement around vehicles leaving licensed establishments.

The RCMP welcomes any tips from the public regarding impaired drivers.
