An East River man has been charged with Driving Impaired by both Alcohol and Drug as well as multiple firearms offences following a traffic stop on Hwy 208 in Nineveh on August 21.
On the evening of August 21, the RCMP learned that a person in Lunenburg County may be driving while impaired.
At approximately 9:20 p.m., Lunenburg District RCMP, assisted by the South Shore Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, located the suspect driving a vehicle on Hwy 208 in Nineveh and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver submitted a breath sample to a roadside Approved Screening Device, which read between 50 and 80 mg% for alcohol. Due to the driver showing significant signs of impairment, he was taken to an RCMP detachment for a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation. The DRE determined that the driver was impaired by drugs as well as alcohol and the driver was arrested.
A search of the vehicle following the arrest revealed a loaded and unregistered firearm.
Kaz Henry Cox, 40 years old, of East River, has been charged with Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by a Combination of Alcohol and Drug and multiple firearms-related offences, including Possession of a Firearm Knowingly Not Being the Holder of a Licence Under Which it May Be Possessed, Possession of a Firearm While Prohibited From Doing So and Transporting a Firearm in a Careless Manner.
Cox was held in custody and appeared in Bridgewater Provincial Court on August 24. He was remanded into custody until his next appearance on September 4 at 9:30 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
The South Shore Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit consists of members from the RCMP and the Bridgewater Police Service.
