Burin Peninsula RCMP suspects distracted driving in a number of recent collisions

News release

Over the past week, Burin Peninsula RCMP has been dispatched to a number of crashes. While some of these incidents involved moose, others did not and police suspect distracted driving.

Two recent reports involved vehicles that crossed over the center line, causing the collision. Weather and road conditions were favorable. Police are considering other factors such as distracted driving, speeding, and or sleepy drivers.

Officers have implemented an increased presence along Route 210 over the past few days, enforcing the Highway Traffic Act, hoping to curb the number of collisions.

Yesterday morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m., police apprehended a 61-year-old man from Marystown for excessive speeding. The vehicle was travelling at a rate of 146 kms/hr in a posted 90 kms/hr speed zone. Officers seized the vehicle for 3 days, suspended his driver's licence and laid charges under the Highway Traffic Act for the excessive speed.

So far today, officers have responded to three more traffic collisions along the Burin Peninsula. One involved a moose, another involved a family in a single vehicle departing the road and the third was a single-vehicle rollover collision. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported.

RCMP NL asks motorists to exercise caution while driving during this Labour Day weekend and everyday to ensure their safety and the safety of all others on the roadway.
