Athabasca RCMP - Male with a gun and shots fired

On October 8, 2019 at approximately 2:27 p.m., Athabasca RCMP received multiple complaints about a male walking down Calling Lake Drive in Calling Lake, Alta. with a firearm, shooting multiple shots in the area. RCMP conducted extensive patrols and were able to quickly identify the suspect.

As a precaution multiple service buildings in the area were locked down, including the Calling Lake School, which was near by as the suspect posed a threat to the public and police. RCMP investigation revealed that the suspect broke into a residence prior to being spotted on the roadway and stole a 12-gauge shotgun and numerous rounds of ammunition.

The RCMP deployed multiple resources including Athabasca Detachment members, Athabasca Integrated Traffic Services, Police Dog Services, RCMP Air Services and a member from Desmarais RCMP.

Police received multiple tips from the Calling Lake Community of the whereabouts of the suspect and were able to arrest him without incident. The firearm in question was not recovered at time of publication.

On October 9, 2019 the 20-year-old accused was brought before a justice of the peace and charged with the following offenses:

  • S. 86(1) CC - Careless use of a Firearm
  • S. 88(1) CC - Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • S. 91(1) CC - Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • S.92(1) CC - Possession of Firearm knowing Possession was Unauthorized
  • S. 98(2)(B) CC- Break and Entering and Stealing a Firearm
  • S. 117.01(1) CC - Possession of a Firearm while Prohibited
  • S.145(3) CC - Fail to Comply with Undertaking

The accused was remanded into custody and is schedule to appear in Athabasca provincial court on October 28, 2019 at 10 a.m.
