News release

A 33-year-old woman, originally from Burton, N.B., but who had been living in Fort Saskatchewan, AB, has died after being struck along the westbound shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway near Havelock, while helping another motorist who had gone into the ditch.

On November 13, 2018, shortly before 5:30 p.m., members of the Riverview RCMP responded to a report of a moving truck that had gone off Highway 2 and rolled over in the ditch. Two other motorists stopped to provide assistance to the driver of the moving truck, who was injured.

A transport truck travelling in the same direction attempted to move over into the left-hand lane, away from the vehicles on the right side of the highway, but jack-knifed causing the trailer to strike the two vehicles that had stopped to provide assistance.

The two drivers, a man and a woman, who were standing outside of their vehicles, were both struck.

The woman died at the scene as a result of her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle and the driver of the moving truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the transport truck was not badly injured.

Traffic was diverted from the area for several hours overnight. The investigation is ongoing, although weather conditions are believed to have been a factor.
